The Business of Being Born - Review

I recently saw a screening of the film, The Business of Being Born,
a documentary examining how babies are born in the United States, as well as the pros and cons of how this life changing event is managed. The film, directed by Abby Epstein and produced by Ricki Lake, follows a skilled midwife as she assists women and families with the intimate, and often debated, experience of home births.
Women, nurses, and physicians are interviewed and voice their views on whether birthing should be treated as a natural process that needs little intervention or a condition warranting extensive medical involvement and supervision.
I experienced a range of emotions while watching this film: shock, anger, frustration, as well as joy. As a nurse, I worked in labor and delivery for many years, so this topic is near and dear to me.
I highly recommend this eye-opening film to anyone working in perinatal care and to women who are or wish to be pregnant. You won’t be disappointed!
