Why You Catch the Flu in the Winter and Other Related Info…

Here's another piece of information to store in your head: It appears scientists have realized why influenza outbreaks occur primarily in the winter. Influenza viruses survive in the cold, dry air better than in a warmer, more humid environment. That's why the flu is uncommon during the summer or in tropical locations. (Source: New York Times)

Well... gee! Why do I suddenly have the urge to say, "Yeah, I could've told you that!" Anyway, this news may not bring much encouragement except for the simple fact of knowing the "why" behind it all.

The best protection against the flu is still proper hand washing and taking care of yourself. Eat well, exercise, sleep, reduce stress, and all that good stuff.

So far the 2007 flu season isn't looking too bad. As of the 1st week in December, there are still 13 states without reported influenza cases and no states with widespread outbreaks. Among the states with the most flu activity are Florida and Texas... which at first glance seems to go against what was mentioned in the first article...

While I'm on the subject of the flu, looks like New Jersey will become the first state requiring influenza vaccines for children entering preschool or daycare. The mandatory fun would begin in September, 2008.

You can still get the flu shot. Sure it may be later in the season, but better late than never. Here are some ideas about where to find inexpensive flu shots.
