Pretty bad, isn't it? Hence the cringe. Perhaps I should have said something as a result of my eavesdropping instead of only gritting my teeth. But that would be getting into someone's business uninvited... that can't be good either. There's a time and place for everything. Maybe a Barbie-isn't-a-good-role-model conversation will happen in the future...

Sagan,
Pretty crazy, isn't it? A 19" waist on a woman would actually look alarming! I'd think she was very very sick.

Mrs. Micah,
I had one Barbie when I was little, but her leg fell off and wouldn't stay when I tried to put it back in its place. I think my esteem for Barbie dropped a few notches then. However, I did play Barbies at my neighbor's house. She had lots of them, and I loved dressing them up in their party gowns. Oh, dear!
Have you heard of the American Girls dolls? Another great alternative to Barbie and a positive brand of dolls for young girls... but they are EXPENSIVE!

19"?!?!?!?! Seriously?? Good lord.

Barbies really send a terrible message. As if there's not enough of these kinds of messages coming from other places, too.

My mom flat out refused to buy me Barbies. I was a little peeved at the time, but now I'm glad. Besides, I always preferred softer dolls. And I hated the blond doll conspiracy. It was really hard to find anything brunette back in the early 90s.

Lynnae,
I just looked up those dolls, and, yeah, they look more like real girls! Imagine that! They look like a much more positive option than the Barbie doll.

If Barbie were a real woman, she'd be very very skinny, and very very top heavy!

My mom gave my daughter a Barbie for her birthday a few years back. I was thrilled when she never took interest in it.

We found an alternative. The Only Hearts Club dolls (you can buy them at Target). They look like.....girls! My daughter LOVES them!
