Understanding Menstrual Period Symptoms

redtreesIn addition to understanding the phases of your menstrual cycle, and understanding the hormones that are involved in all of the myriad of changes that your body goes through on a monthly basis, it is also important for you to understand what symptoms are actually menstrual period symptoms so that you know what to experience and what to expect. There are both physical and emotional or mental menstrual period symptoms that can affect you, and the truth is that they can affect different women in different ways. Some menstrual period symptoms are merely minor inconveniences while others become a serious disruption to your life and enjoyment. Some women experience menstrual period symptoms that are severe enough that they are prevented from enjoying normal day to day activities.

There are a number of different menstrual period symptoms that can be associated with the menstruation cycle. Generally speaking, there are two different categories that these symptoms can fit into, which are physical menstrual period symptoms and emotional menstrual period symptoms.

Physical Menstrual Period Symptoms - Some of the more common physical menstrual period symptoms include the following:

  • Tenderness in the breasts,
  • Feeling of bloating,
  • Headache or tension in the head,
  • Swelling in the extremities, such as the arms, legs and fingers,
  • Menstrual cramping in the abdomen, back and inner thighs.

Emotional Menstrual Period Symptoms - Surprisingly enough, there are more emotional menstrual period symptoms than physical ones for many women. Some of the different emotional symptoms that are generally associated with your menstrual cycle will include:

  • Changes in your mood,
  • Withdrawal from social activities and gatherings,
  • Confusion and a difficulty with basic concentration tasks,
  • Anxiety and feelings of nervousness,
  • Increased moodiness, irritability, difficulty focusing and a loss of interest in favorite things,
  • Outbursts in anger or an increased tendency to argue or pick fights,
  • Feelings of depression.

If you are experiencing any of the menstrual period symptoms mentioned above, then know that you are not alone. It may be a good idea for you to begin to chart your symptoms using a cycle calendar so that you can keep track of what menstrual period symptoms you are experiencing and when. You need to come to understand how your body is affected by your menstrual cycle in order to make sense of the symptoms that you are feeling. Once you know what menstrual period symptoms are affecting you, you can take steps to better manage your menstrual cycle for less symptoms. This is the best way to make sure that your menstrual period symptoms are not debilitating and do not prevent you from living your life.
