Baby Development Milestones at Week 5

napAfter weeks' worth of rapid cell development, one of the biggest baby development milestones during this week is that your baby is taking on a much more distinct form. During your fifth week worth of pregnancy, here are some of the things that are happening inside of you:

  • Your baby's heart and his or her circulatory system are both taking shape. There is now a bulge that indicates where the heart is developing within your baby. By the time the fifth week of your pregnancy has ended, your baby is already experiencing forming of his or her earliest blood vessels.
  • The umbilical cord is now working to replace the baby's yolk sac. This umbilical cord works alongside the placenta as a means for bringing nutrition as well as oxygen to your baby as well as to remove any wastes from the placenta.
  • At five weeks of pregnancy, your baby is approximately the length of a pen tip, which is about 1/17 of an inch, and he or she is growing quite rapidly every single day.

In addition to these baby development milestones, your body is also experiencing changes as well. Although externally the latter half of your pregnancy is going to be more dramatic to the world, the beginning weeks of your pregnancy are going to include some of the most dramatic changes internally for you. All of the systems within your pregnant body are changing in order to help your new baby with his or her development. During the fifth week of your pregnancy, you may begin to notice some of the following things:

  • Are you feeling more fatigued than usual? Your body is producing a lot more blood than usual in order to carry nutrients and oxygen to your growing baby. This increase in blood is likely to be especially high during your fifth week of pregnancy, and this is going to place demands on the circulation in your body. Your heart rate, in turn, is going to increase in order to keep the pace, and this could potentially cause headaches, fatigue and dizziness.
  • At your fifth week of pregnancy, you may also be experiencing a number of other symptoms indicating early pregnancy including more frequent urination and mood swings. You may also experience heightened sense of smell, nausea and breast changes. Most women do begin to experience some symptoms for the first time during their fifth week of pregnancy, but every single pregnancy is unique. Some symptoms may end up appearing later, and other symptoms may never appear at all.
  • Around your fifth week of pregnancy, your placenta is going to grow, securing to the uterus while supporting and nourishing your baby and this may cause some light spotting.
