Yoga for Over 50

September 1, 2009 by Daryl Cook

relaxOne of the newest fads to sweep the nation is yoga routines that are especially designed to suit different types of people. One such type of yoga practice that is gaining in popularity is yoga for over 50 years old. Growing old is a stage in our lives where we find more time for taking care of ourselves and for leisure, and yoga really seems to fit in with this. Because people over the age of 50 are becoming more and more susceptible to certain injuries and illnesses, finding ways to stay healthy is becoming increasingly important. In order to avoid arthritis, rheumatism, high blood pressure and incontinence, seniors are learning how to stay fit in new and unique ways and one such way is the practice of yoga.

What makes yoga such a unique practice is the fact that it can be performed almost anywhere and by almost anyone. Because you can ease into the poses on a comfortable surface, all you need is a yoga mat or a soft floor and a willingness to practice until you get the pose right. Yoga increases the ability to breathe, opens up the body, increases blood flow, encourages flexibility and has numerous other health benefits that make it a positive choice for people of all ages, young and old.

Yoga is a method of exercise that easily adapts to the needs of those practicing it, meaning that even pregnant women and senior citizens can practice it. It deals with your entire being from head to toe, meaning that your mind will be calmer and your body will be fitter, and all of you will be positively changed as a result of doing yoga. Yoga is beneficial in preventing diseases and health problems and giving you an overall sense of positive well being as well. When it comes to yoga for over 50 years old, senior citizens should consult a doctor and find out what asanas will best benefit them.

Different yoga poses have completely different health benefits. They can be linked up into a chain reaction yoga sequence that helps your entire body feel healthier, more energized, clearer and calmer as a result. It is vitally important that you be safe when practicing yoga as with any other workout program, especially if you are already injured or ill.

In practicing yoga, it is vitally important that you know and understand your body and your limits, and that you accept those limits. You should never push yourself too hard into any one pose. Yoga is only going to be effective if you practice it in the right way. If you try too hard, then you are going to expose yourself to an injury which will prevent you from getting the most out of what this fitness practice has to offer you.
